Zimbra: FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions About Zimbra

What is Zimbra?
Zimbra is the new e-mail system that we will start using this fall. With Zimbra, you'll be able to access your e-mail, manage your calendar and address book, and do much, much more — from campus, home, or wherever you have Internet access. For the first time, all members of the Nazareth community will be using the same e-mail system.

Will my e-mail address change?
No, your e-mail address will be the same as the one you are currently using.

Why are we switching to Zimbra?
Right now, Nazareth uses several different e-mail programs. Many of these aren't compatible with one another, making it hard to do things like exchange documents, share calendars, or even offer basic technical support. With the switch to Zimbra, Nazareth will have one unified e-mail system for better collaboration and support across campus. Back to top

Is Zimbra better than any of the other programs we are currently using?
Yes, it is. It solves a problem that many people have had in accessing their e-mails and calendars from off campus. Now, with Zimbra, that will be easy to do.

How will I learn to use Zimbra?
The Information Technology Services (ITS) department will be offering training programs beginning in late summer to prepare you to use Zimbra successfully.

What about using Zimbra on a Mac?
Zimbra will look and function the same way on PC and Mac. There are only three noticable exceptions:
1. On a Mac, in the Zimbra Help Site there is no Search window, but you can search alphabetically through the index.
2. If instructions call for "right clicking,"on your Mac you can holding down the Control key on your keyboard while clicking to get the same results.
3. If you need to download Firefox, the steps are slightly different. (see the document on the home page of mynaz.naz.edu.

Is there anything I should be doing to prepare for the change to Zimbra?
Yes, you should use the next six months to clean out your e-mails and mail folders. You should delete any e-mails you no longer need and should save any e-mails you have to your hard drive. If you need help with this, please call the User Support Center at ext. 2111.

What do I do with my old e-mails that I don't want to delete? Can I transfer them over to Zimbra?
No, you won't be able to move old e-mails over to Zimbra, but you can keep them for reading and reference if you save them to your personal computer (hard drive). Webmail users will be able to access their old e-mails from the Webmail site as they currently do, but at some point in the future that, too, will change; ITS will notify you when this option will no longer be available.

I've been hearing about a Portal. Is this the same as a Portal?
No, a portal is a Web-based, customizable world that enables quick, easy access to everything from news and updates to NazNet and Blackboard, and it will make collaboration and information sharing between us much easier. Zimbra is an e-mail program, like Outlook or Mozilla. The portal was originally going to be launched in the fall with Zimbra, but the Portal Steering Committee decided to delay the launch of the portal until spring 2008. This way, we all can learn Zimbra first and then learn the portal at a later date, which will be easier for all of us.
